Its not about aesthetics...its about survival
The focus on water, the environment, farm land, forests etc is not about aesthetics its about survival. Jarred Diamond's "Collapse" and Thomas Friedman's "Hot, Flat and Crowded" point out in no uncertain terms that societies that ignore their environment and use exploitation instead of innovation do not do well. The problem today is that the world has become one huge integrated "society" and there are powerful forces at work which must be harmonized with the reality that without an ecology which thrives, humans will not thrive. Our County is at a tipping point and we yet can realize the enduring power in protection as opposed to the fleeting profits of exploitation. I urge all residents to speak out and take hold of the reins of the County's future. I know we are all busy with just getting on day to day but it is time to think and act in context. Our community can become an example of the very best in West Virginia if we hold on to our blessings. |

To bring this sentiment closer to home, the fact that there is consideration for placing a large sewage system at the very forks of the best trout stream in West Virginia is breathtaking. The ecosystem is fragile and unique, which is what makes the Elk River so special. Pocahontas County is the birthplace of rivers and it is our task to make sure those rivers remain special, the focal point of tourism, and a part of what makes the county a destination for many travelers and sportsmen. |
