Extraction

Here is an interesting way to look at our situation in a quote someone emailed to me:

Extraction is how we used to do rural economic development. Douglas firs. Salmon. Coal. Currently, we’re extracting raw land for large lot subdivisions. The challenge is do a different kind of “extraction,” to get as much “use” out of our landscape, forests, beaches, mountains, clean air and water, etc without diminishing its ability to sustain the high quality of life of those of us lucky enough to call this place home.

Re: Extraction

what we have now is the extraction of our best talent and our hopes and dreams.more and more people have to work out of town in order to make ends meet.staying in a motel 4 or 5 nights a week or being gone for a month or two is hard on your marriage as well as your children.what has kept this county rural wasn't tourism but jobs like the tannery in marlinton and frank, coal mines on sharps knob, cheat and richwood, hanover shoe ,backcreek hydro. and the papermill in covington va.these were jobs where you still had time to do farming to help with paying the bills or saving for college.jobs in tourism are low paying and mostly part time.even the people classified as full time employees at snow shoe gets laid off two or three months a year.people should have an option of working at other jobs besides tourism as most people i talk to hate it but have no other options of work. while you may live the high life most have a hard time of making it but as the song goes; a county boy can survive.
