Court House Passes Drug Policy

After much time and deliberation, The County Commission finally passed a Court House drug policy. It tests new employees, safety sensitive employees at random and employees for reasonable suspicion of drug use while on the job. I voluntarily tested myself at the Health Department yesterday and was negative. I also will place myself in the random test pool. I believe that all elected officials should follow my example and step up to the plate and "lead by example". I also invite individuals and groups in the community to step forward and voluntarily test themselves to show that Pocahontas County is a community where citizens take a real stand to fight drug and alcohol abuse. Words alone will never convince anyone to stop drug abuse; only examples work.

Thanks for your leadership on this issue. The formulation of this policy has taken quite a bit of time but your patience has paid off with the policy being implemented the right way.

Thank you for your support of this action. It is good to see the County Commission taking a pro-active stance on this very important issue. You mentioned that you are inviting other community groups to step forward and be tested. Could you give information on how this could take place? Does the county have facilities that other community groups could use? What is the cost for something like this?

Re: Court House Passes Drug Policy

The County Health Department does the testing. It's a fast urine screen taking about five minutes total conducted by the Health Department RN. I believe the cost is $12.50 a test, but I/ll check that and post on Monday. I'd be very happy to see other community groups and individuals step-up and demonstrate their commitment to a drug-free county. One of the greatest impediments to drug and alcohol abuse reform is the "self-lie"; testing means confrontation with one's own circumstance.
